Historical Background

In 1955, James Mackie & Sons, Belfast, Northern Ireland, set up a factory for manufacturing machineries for Jute mills on the banks of river Hooghly, near the city of Kolkata and named the company after the name of a rivulet, LAGAN. They continued their operation till 1978 when Government of India took over control of the company in its entirety. In 1987, the company became a fully owned subsidiary of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Ltd (BBUNL) under Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India and thus became a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU).

Lagan was disinvested in July 2000.

The process enriched Lagan in more ways than one. The most significant of which being the focus on intensive R&D to provide future-generation, cost-effective and value-added machinery for the jute industry. Lagan, always in the quest of excellence, is on the lookout to expand its market and product range. This includes development of new products, diversification of markets and value-addition through lateral and vertical integration to persistently improve upon the bottom line. The company is working on doubling its stature within the next couple of years or so.

About Us

Lagan Engineering Company Ltd, (earlier known as The Lagan Jute Machinery Company Ltd.) is one of the leading jute mill machine manufacturer in India. Our product range includes Spreader, Breaker Card, Finisher Card, all types of Drawings and Spinning Frames, Flyer Twisting and all the other modern machinery needed in the jute industry.

We also do the jobbing work in our captive foundry, for Grey Iron & SG Iron Casting. We can manufacture casting up to 700 Kg, as per the drawing provided by the customer.
Lagan has carved a niche for itself in the world market not only by offering machines and spares of globally acceptable quality and standards – which stand out not only for their performance, trouble- free operation and impeccable craftsmanship, but also for its team of professionals manning the key areas of operation, dedicated workforce and personalized post-sales service. Management Team

Board of Director :

Mr. Anirudh Kajaria representing the fourth generation of family had joined Lagan as CAO after completing his B. Sc. in Business Management from Babson College, Boston, USA after completing his High School from St. Xavier’s School, Kolkata. He has also completed a Management Development Program on R&D and Innovation Management from IIM, Kolkata.
Mr. Kajaria has been the Managing Director of Lagan since 2006. As the Managing Director of Lagan, he has taken keen interest in the development and diversification of the company. Apart from management of the company, Mr. Kajaria has been actively involved in constructing the company’s R&D program. Under his leadership, Lagan has developed new jute processing machines like Breaker Card, Finisher Card while further efforts and projects are on. He is a member of the Executive Council of the Textile Machinery Manufacturer’s Association, a member of the Council of Indian Jute Industries Research Association as well as a member of the Reconstituted Development Council for Textile Machinery Industry. Mr. Kajaria is also a Director of the Indian Jute Machinery Research & Development, which is the SPV for development of Jute Machinery in association with the Ministry of Textiles (under the Jute Technology Mission).

Mr. Ajay Kumar Kajaria, Director also joined the family business just after completing his graduation in commerce stream. A man of good economic foresight, he has been successful in strengthening the financial base of the company. His perseverance and strong sense of marketing is revealed in his excellence in international marketing. Now 40, he has been honored with the post of President, Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce, Calcutta. He is Director of Murlidhar Ratanlal Exports Limited, Kajaria Burlap Industries Pvt. Ltd., Kajaria Yarns & Twins Ltd., Khaitan Electricals Pvt. Ltd.


Mr. Gordon Mackie, one of the Directors in the Board of Lagan, is a widely recognized expert in textile engineering, marketing and process technology and is a celebrated International Textile Consultant. He was the Chairman & Chief Executive of James Mackie & Sons Ltd. A renowned author of many technical publications, Mr. Mackie has undertaken several studies and authored many International Books on jute and textile technology. He has also been advisor to many groups for mapping out the future technology for jute processing. At James Mackie & Sons, Mr. Mackie has successfully developed new machines for jute as well as other industries. At Lagan, he is involved as an Advisor to the R&D division.


Mr. Vishnu Kumar Fogla : A Mechanical Engineer from B.I.T. is in the Board of Kamakhya (India) Ltd. and Sai Sulphonates Pvt. Ltd., Kamakhya Packaging Pvt. Ltd., Rama Laminators Pvt. Key Personnel :
Mr. K S Chopra (General Manager – Sales) is a Graduate from IJT as a Jute Technologist, who has worked in various capacities of the organizations including assembly and sales. He is well-known among jute mills and has extensive knowledge of their working, their problems as well as their requirements. He plays an important role in making sure development and commercialization go hand-in-hand.

Mr.Rajesh Ghorawat(Company Secretary)- He is member of Institute of Company Secretaries of India & Institute of Cost & Works Accountants of India. He is also Green Belt Holder in Six Sigma & Certified ISO Internal Auditor. Carries more than 15 years of service experience in Secretarial, Legal & Procurement division.

Group Companies

Upon disinvestment in July 2000, Murlidhar Ratanlal Exports Ltd (MREL)– the noted export house for jute products - acquired 74% of the stake in Lagan thereby making Lagan its subsidiary. The Murlidhar Ratanlal Group (MREL Group) was founded in 1964 by Late Sri Murlidhar Kajaria and Late Sri Ratanlal Kajaria, which in course of time, became one of the most promising Jute export house in West Bengal. From an annual turnover of meagreRs 2.5 Lacs in the sixties, the Group turnover has now exceeded Rs 400 crores. Other companies under the MREL Group are:

Kajaria Yarns & Twines Ltd. (KYTL)- A 100 % Export Oriented Unit (EOU) equipped with imported machinery to produce finest quality jute yarns of 100 to 9000 tex to meet the growing overseas demand.
The Hastings Jute Mill. (HJM)- One of the oldest mills in India situated on the bank of the Hooghly on a land of about five acre and about 35 km away from Kolkata. It is a composite mill having the divisions like Raw Jute, Batching, Spinning, Weaving, and Finishing.
The group has recently acquired India Jute Mill in Srerampore .The mill has a capacity in excess of 100 M.T. per day jute products such as hessian, sacking and value added JDPs
The group has recently acquired Gondolpara Jute Mill (GJM) is located in Chandennagore, Hooghly, WB. It is spread over around 50 Acres of land by the river Hooghly. The Gondolpara Jute Mill is one of the finest mills in India with well-maintained modern machines that are rarely available in other jute mills. GJM has been involved in the production of diversified jute products such as bleached and dyed jute fabrics being widely used for making high-end shopping bags and other items. Its products are of the finest quality and command a high price in the market.
Lagan, under the patronage of MREL group, is widely credited for putting India on the global map by designing and developing innovative range of jute mill machineries.

The Market Leader
Born, nurtured and groomed in India, Lagan, over the years, has grown in stature and is currently a household name among jute mill owners and jute technologists across the globe. Consistent quality and highly innovative products have helped the company carve a niche in overseas markets. Lagan first entered the exports field with exports to Bangladesh, one of the major jute producers of the world along with India and followed it up with the Republic of Mali, West Africa.
Other overseas markets where Lagan is intensely exploring fresh avenues are Nepal, Thailand, South Vietnam, Cuba, Kenya and Egypt.
Lagan in the face of stiff global competition from many nations including developed countries has been able to hold its own in every respect.
Research & Development:
Lagan is investing in R& D to develop new generation of Jute machines that will boost its demand and provide a stable market in the future. Lagan’s R&D interacts continuously with industry to manufacture new models and upgrade existing range of machines and got involved in many successful projects including the development of the 4¾” versatile Spinning frame. Lagan is equipped with fast computers, plotter and modern working infrastructure. It uses latest 3D modeling, design and simulation tools and CAM technology to constantly upgrade the machines.
It is also Private Partner with National Jute Board for formation of Centre for Jute Machinery Development(CJMD) in accordance with the 6.2 Jute Technology Mission (JTM) schemes for Development of Jute Machineries launched by Ministry of Textile (MoT).
CJMD has well equipped with all modern amenities Design Centre, Workshop, , Assembly Shop, Testing Room etc. Design centre has well designed work stations for comfortable working of the Design Engineers. Designing Software called PRO-e along with various advanced modules has been installed on the computers
Its workshop has all latest machines like: CNC Turn Mill Centre, CNC Milling - 3 axis, CNC Milling - 5 axis, Conventional Lathe, Milling, Slotting, Tool & Cutter Grinder, Radial Drilling ,Portable Drilling , Plano Millers, Cylindrical Grinder, Lathe etc. Its laboratory has instruments like Instron, Wrap Block, Twist Tester, Wrap Reel , Yarn Appearance Board, Moisture Meter, Electronic Weighing System, Verniers, Height Gauges, Micrometers, Surface checking gauge, Dial Indicator, Gear tooth micrometer, Gear tooth Vernier, Rockwel Harness Testing Instrument and many more instruments.
